Speed limits
In Turkey, there are the following speed limits:
50 km / h: In towns and cities (in urban areas). Exceptions are indicated by special road signs or symbols.
90 km / h: Outside towns and cities (if not stated otherwise).
120 km / h: On highways, exceptions are indicated by special road signs or symbols.
Blinker
Always use your blinker if you change lanes, overtake, pre-sort on highways, etc.
Lighting
When you drive in the dark, always turn your headlights on. Use your parking strong lights only when in unlit roads outside urban areas.
Priority
Generally, vehicles which come from the right have priority. Trams have priority, regardless of whether they come from left or right.
Seat belts
Wearing seatbelts is mandatory for the driver of the vehicle and all other passengers.
Mobile phone in the car
Drivers of motor vehicles, mopeds and disabled vehicles shall not make or receive calls. Also SMS, email and WAP and are not allowed. You can also not hold your cell phone in your hand.
Violation of this prohibition may bring you a big fine. Also your mobile phone will be confiscated.
Parking
In most cities in Turkey you are only allowed to park at places where there are official parking attendants, at parking lots and at garages. Parking attendants are recognised from their orange vests. If you do not pay or park in an area where you can not park, you will get a parking ticket, a wheel clamp on your car or find the car even towed.
Alcohol
The permitted alcohol content is 0.5 per mil for drivers of passenger cars.
Helmet requirement
There is a helmet requirement for drivers of motorcycles and scooters.
Emergency
The national first aid number in Turkey is 112.
Accident
The moment you become involved in an accident, you undertake the following steps:
• Stop the vehicle immediately;
• Ignite your emergency flashers;
• Investigate whether there is physical or material damage;
• Notify us immediately and we will call fire and ambulance service if necessary, and we will arrange necessary actions with the police;
• Remain at the scene of accident;
• Even if you think you are (partly) guilty for the accident, do not write anything down. Make no payments!;
• Do not move or remove any evidence such as skid marks and broken glass.
